Medical physics jobs outside the NHS
If you only watch NHS Jobs, you can miss whole parts of the medical physics market. Private providers, universities, research centres and manufacturers use different job titles and different hiring calendars.
Private hospitals and oncology providers
Private oncology providers can be especially relevant for radiotherapy physics, dosimetry, MR-linac work and nuclear medicine. These jobs can look more commercial than NHS posts, but the scientific themes are familiar: planning quality, machine QA, patient safety, legislation, commissioning and service development.
HCA Healthcare UK
HCA UK advertises scientist and radiotherapy physics roles through its careers site, including advanced radiotherapy work in London.
Ramsay Health Care UK
Ramsay is relevant to private radiotherapy and oncology pathways. Its careers pages are worth checking when searching outside NHS boards.
Universities and research centres
Research posts often use titles such as MRI physicist, PET imaging physicist, imaging scientist, research associate, postdoctoral researcher or lecturer. The work may be less directly service-based than an NHS department, but can still sit close to clinical imaging, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine or translational research.

Good for university research, postdoctoral, technical specialist and lecturer roles. Search both “medical physics” and specialisms such as MRI physics.
NPL careers
The National Physical Laboratory is relevant to metrology, radiation measurement and applied science roles that may appeal to medical physics candidates.

Large imaging and cancer research groups sometimes advertise directly through their own university sites before candidates notice them elsewhere.
Medical equipment manufacturers
Manufacturers do not always advertise for “medical physicists” by name. Look for roles in applications, clinical science, imaging science, product physics, QA, service, research, training and customer support. These can suit people who like technical depth but want to work closer to equipment, software and product development.

Siemens Healthineers and Varian roles can cover imaging, radiotherapy, service, clinical applications and oncology technology.
Elekta
Elekta is a radiotherapy technology company. Search beyond “physicist” for applications, service, product and clinical roles.
Canon Medical UK
Canon Medical UK covers CT, MR, X-ray, ultrasound and healthcare informatics, with roles across engineering, applications and support.
Philips UK
Philips careers can be relevant for imaging, informatics and healthcare technology roles where physics and clinical context help.
How to decide whether a non-NHS role fits
- Ask whether the work builds clinical physics evidence, product experience, research output or transferable technical skill.
- Check whether registration, MPE status or NHS experience is required or only desirable.
- Look for the real daily work: service support, research, customer-facing applications, software, QA, regulatory work or training.
- Be honest about whether you want patient-facing clinical science, technical product work, or a research pathway.
