England STP overview

What is the Scientist Training Programme in medical physics?

In England, the STP is a full-time three-year clinical scientist training programme combining salaried workplace learning with a funded part-time master's degree. Direct entry is competitive; in-service entry needs employer nomination.

Who can use direct entry?

Direct entry is open to applicants who meet the academic and eligibility requirements. Existing NHS employees can apply, but would leave their existing post if they accept a direct-entry training place.

How is in-service entry different?

In-service entry is for an existing NHS employee working in a recognised scientific specialty. The employer must nominate the applicant and have approved training arrangements in place; it is not a second open route for external applicants.
