How do medical physics training routes differ across the UK?
There is no single identical UK recruitment route. Start with the nation where you want to train, then use that body's current guidance and live vacancies for dates, eligibility, specialties and funding.

What is the England route?
The NSHCS runs the Scientist Training Programme. Direct-entry posts are open competitively to eligible applicants; in-service applicants must already be NHS employees nominated and supported by their employer.
What is the Wales route?
The Wales STP is a three-year graduate-entry programme managed by Health Education and Improvement Wales with NHS Wales organisations and the NSHCS. Use the live Wales page for current recruitment information rather than carrying England dates or post choices across.
What is the Scotland route?
NHS Education for Scotland commissions pre-registration clinical scientist training, and host departments advertise posts through NHS Scotland JobTrain. The NHS Scotland careers page describes the Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Training Scheme and the role itself.
What is the Northern Ireland route?
HSC employers advertise trainee posts with the eligibility, training and application details for that vacancy. Search the official HSC Jobs service and use the named employer contact when a relevant post is live; do not rely on an old advert as a national timetable.
Where do structured training and equivalence fit?
IPEM's Clinical Scientist Guided Training Scheme can provide a workplace training framework. AHCS scientist-level equivalence assesses whether prior training and experience meet outcomes comparable to the STP and, if successful, provides eligibility to apply for HCPC registration. Neither route is an informal shortcut.
Are clinical technologist, MPE and RPA routes the same?
No. Clinical technologists have a distinct training and registration route. Medical Physics Expert and Radiation Protection Adviser status involve specialist recognition or appointment criteria and are not automatic outcomes of initial clinical scientist registration.
