How do you become a medical physicist in the UK?

In England, a common direct route has four stages: meet the published academic requirements, secure a place on the three-year Scientist Training Programme, complete its workplace and master's-level training, then apply for HCPC registration as a Clinical Scientist. Entry and registration are separate decisions. If you plan to train in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, compare the medical physics training routes across the UK because the programme names and arrangements differ.

What should you study first?

Physics is the most direct foundation for many medical physics routes, but the NSHCS assesses whether a degree is relevant to the specialty rather than relying on one universal title list.

What is the usual clinical scientist route in England?

Direct-entry STP trainees are employed on a three-year, full-time training contract and complete an accredited part-time master's degree alongside workplace training. In-service entry is for an existing NHS employee nominated and supported by their employer.

How long does the route take?

The STP is normally three years full time. Before applying, compare your qualification or combination of qualifications with the current published entry requirements. Successful completion makes you eligible to apply to the HCPC; registration is a separate decision rather than automatic. Other training and equivalence routes have different timescales.
